A New Way to Measure Ageing

Imagine taking a routine blood test that could reveal how quickly your organs are ageing and help predict future health risks. Researchers at University College London (UCL) and Stanford University are exploring this possibility, with findings that could change the future of preventive healthcare.

Why Organs Age Differently

Research suggests that organs do not all age at the same pace. An organ that appears biologically older than expected may be be linked to a higher risk of disease.

  • A faster-ageing heart may increase the risk of cardiovascular disease or stroke.
  • A faster-ageing immune system may be associated with dementia.
  • A faster-ageing liver may increase the risk of liver disease.

How the Blood Test Works

The test uses proteomics, a technology that analyses thousands of proteins in the blood. These proteins provide clues about the health and biological age of different organs.

Researchers studied more than 6,000 people and found that individuals with older-looking organs were more likely to develop disease in later years.

Professor Mika Kivimäki explained:

"This test could give people an early warning about their future health, allowing them to take steps to reduce their risks."

Why This Matters

Earlier detection could allow people to take action before symptoms appear, including:

  • Healthier lifestyle changes
  • Earlier medical interventions
  • More personalised healthcare plans

What Happens Next

The research is still in its early stages and is not yet part of routine healthcare. Scientists are continuing to study how accurate the test is, whether lifestyle changes can slow organ ageing, and when it may become publicly available.

A blood test that estimates how quickly your organs are ageing could become a valuable tool for predicting disease risk earlier and supporting preventive healthcare. Although more research is needed, it represents an exciting step towards more personalised medicine.
