The science that helps you take control of your weight

Up to 70% of our weight is influenced by biological factors such as genetics and hormones, which cannot always be addressed through diet and exercise alone. Our healthcare professionals can prescribe treatments that target these factors directly and work with your body, not against it.

Treatment for obesity is not cheating

Diet and exercise are essential for weight management, but the reality is that many people struggle to lose weight in the long term through lifestyle changes alone.

For 1 in 2 adults with obesity in the Netherlands, biological factors often also need to be addressed. Combined with developing healthy habits, this leads to an effective and lasting solution.

Questions about weight loss, answered by Dr Alhasan

Who is eligible?

Weight management treatment may be appropriate for adults who meet recognised clinical criteria. You may be eligible if you have:

  • A BMI of 30 or higher
  • A BMI of 27.5 or higher if you are from a non-White ethnic background
  • A BMI of 27 or higher with at least one weight-related health condition, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, obstructive sleep apnoea, or PCOS

These criteria are based on established clinical guidelines. However, eligibility is not determined by BMI alone. A doctor will assess your overall health, medical history, and individual risk factors before approving any treatment.

Who should not use weight loss medication?

Weight-loss medications are not suitable for everyone and will only be prescribed where it is safe to do so.

You should not use these treatments if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding, are under 18, have a current or past eating disorder, a history of pancreatitis, a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or MEN2, certain severe gastrointestinal conditions, other significant medical conditions where treatment may pose a risk, or take medications that may interact adversely.

During your consultation, a doctor will carefully assess your responses. If treatment is not appropriate, it will not be prescribed, and alternative advice may be provided where suitable.

How does the consultation work?

Your consultation is completed through a secure online medical questionnaire, designed by doctors to capture all relevant clinical information.

You will be asked about your current health and weight history, existing medical conditions, current medications and allergies, and lifestyle factors where relevant.

A registered doctor will then review your answers and may approve treatment if it is safe and appropriate, decline treatment if there are safety concerns or it is not clinically suitable, or request further information before making a final decision.

Patient safety is always the priority, and prescriptions are only issued where appropriate.

How long does review take?

Most reviews are completed within 24 hours. Complex cases can take longer if we need extra information. You will receive updates by email.

What treatments do you offer?

We offer a range of clinically approved weight-management treatments, prescribed only after review by a registered doctor:

  • Mounjaro® (tirzepatide), a once-weekly injectable that targets appetite regulation and blood sugar control
  • Wegovy® (semaglutide), a once-weekly injectable specifically licensed for weight management
  • Ozempic® (semaglutide), a once-weekly injectable primarily licensed for type 2 diabetes, but may be prescribed in selected cases where clinically appropriate
  • Orlistat, an oral medication taken with meals that reduces fat absorption from food

The most appropriate treatment will depend on your clinical profile, preferences, and safety considerations, and will be determined by the prescribing doctor.

Injections vs oral options, what is the difference?

The main differences relate to how the medication is taken and how it works in the body.

Injectable treatments such as Mounjaro®, Wegovy®, and Ozempic® are given once weekly under the skin. They work by regulating appetite hormones and slowing gastric emptying, are generally associated with greater weight loss outcomes, and are more likely to cause gastrointestinal side effects at the start.

Oral treatments such as Orlistat are taken as capsules with meals. They work by reducing the absorption of dietary fat, may suit patients who prefer to avoid injections, and usually require consistent daily use and dietary adjustment.

A doctor will help you choose the most suitable option based on your medical history, treatment goals, and preferences.

What side effects are common?

Like all medications, weight-loss treatments can cause side effects, although not everyone will experience them.

The most commonly reported side effects, particularly with injectable treatments, are gastrointestinal and often occur when starting treatment or increasing the dose. These include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea or constipation, abdominal discomfort or bloating, reduced appetite, and headache or fatigue.

These effects are usually mild to moderate and tend to improve over time as your body adjusts.

Less commonly, more serious side effects can occur. A doctor will assess your suitability before prescribing, and you will receive clear guidance on how to use the medication safely. If you experience severe, persistent, or concerning symptoms, you should stop the medication and seek medical advice promptly.

What if I am struggling with side effects?

If you experience side effects, many are temporary and often improve as your body adjusts. Simple steps like smaller meals, staying well hydrated, and avoiding heavy or fatty foods can help.

If symptoms are persistent, troublesome, or getting worse, stop the medication and seek medical advice. You can also contact our clinical team for guidance. A registered doctor may recommend practical adjustments, further advice, or stopping treatment if needed.

If you develop severe symptoms or feel seriously unwell, seek urgent medical care immediately.
