“Miss a pass, and the first criticism was that you were fat.”

Gabriel started competing at 15 - and started fighting his weight the same day. In sport, the judgment came fast and personal: any mistake on the pitch and the weight was the first thing thrown at him.

Off the pitch, he hid: “I’d ask for baggier clothes so my body wouldn’t show.”

And the discipline cycle ground on for years:

“I could be very disciplined for ten days, reach day eleven, and break. Then I’d fail for the next fifteen.”

Discipline was never the problem, the cycle is built into biology

Gabriel had more discipline than most people ever apply to anything, a competitor’s discipline, trained since his teens. It still broke on day eleven, every time. That’s the trap: restriction triggers biological pushback, appetite signals get louder the longer you hold out, and the crash isn’t a lapse of character, it’s the body winning an argument it was always going to win. Even athletes lose that fight, because it was never a fitness fight to begin with. A medically supervised programme changes the argument itself.

Fit people struggle too. Weight is appetite biology, not a fitness score, training hard doesn’t quiet hunger signals.

The day-eleven crash has a mechanism. The longer the restriction, the louder the pushback. That’s physiology, not weakness.

Smaller goals count. In Gabriel’s words: “One can say 10 kilos seems trivial, but it influences you.” You don’t need a dramatic story to deserve help.

"Food should nourish you, not be a medication for your anxiety."

That's the understanding Gabriel came out with. Before, a bad day had a familiar ending: "The anxiety I used to have when something negative happened, that I used to offset by eating or drinking, it stopped coming."
The anxiety around food simply left the room. Eating went back to being what it's for.

No more anxiety eating · Food is food again · Off the ten-day cycle

Gabriel says he has a physical form he hadn't had "in six or seven years." The competitor's calculus is simple: "Falling with 10 kilos more is different from falling with 10 kilos less."
But listen to what he ranks highest:

"Now I feel much more confident, much more at peace. This process has taught me that I am capable. I've managed to achieve what I thought I no longer could." - Gabriel
