Understanding Wegovy side effects before you start or early in treatment  is one of the most useful things you can do, because most of them are predictable, manageable and temporary. Being prepared means you'll recognise what's normal, know what eases with time, and understand the rarer signs that need prompt attention. This guide sets out the full picture honestly: how common each effect is, what to watch for, and practical ways to manage them. It's for information only and doesn't replace the advice of your prescriber, who knows your medical history.

How common are Wegovy side effects?

Most people experience at least one side effect, and that's expected rather than a warning sign. In the STEP-1 trial, around three-quarters of participants reported at least one gastrointestinal effect. The great majority of Wegovy side effects are digestive, mild to moderate, and most noticeable in the first days after starting or after each dose increase. They tend to be worst during dose escalation and ease significantly within four to eight weeks at each dose level.

This pattern is the direct result of how the medicine works, semaglutide slows how quickly the stomach empties, which is also why treatment is titrated upward slowly. Understanding that link helps: the discomfort that can follow a dose increase usually settles as your body adjusts.

The most common Wegovy side effects

Regulators group side effects by how often they occur. Here are the most frequently reported Wegovy side effects:

Frequency

Effects

Very common (more than 1 in 10)

Nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain, headache, fatigue

Common (up to 1 in 10)

Dizziness, indigestion, bloating, belching, wind, reflux, gastritis, gallstones, hair loss, injection-site reactions

Uncommon (up to 1 in 100)

Acute pancreatitis, gallbladder inflammation, raised heart rate, delayed stomach emptying

Rare (up to 1 in 1,000)

Serious allergic reactions

To give a sense of scale on the most common ones, in STEP-1 nausea affected roughly 44% of people, diarrhoea about 30%, and vomiting around 24%, with stomach pain in about 20% and headache in around 14%. Fatigue was reported by roughly 11%. These are cumulative figures over a long trial, not what you'd feel every week and many people have far milder experiences or adjust quickly.

Serious side effects to be aware of

Serious Wegovy side effects are uncommon or rare, but it's important to recognise them because they need prompt medical attention. Seek urgent care, and contact your prescriber, if you experience:

  • Signs of pancreatitis: severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, often with nausea or vomiting. If you have symptoms of pancreatitis, stop taking Wegovy and get medical help.

  • Gallbladder problems: pain under the right ribs (especially after fatty meals), fever, or yellowing of the skin or eyes. Gallstones were reported more often on Wegovy than placebo in trials.

  • A serious allergic reaction: swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing, or a severe rash.

  • Signs of dehydration or kidney strain: from prolonged vomiting or diarrhoea: dark urine, dizziness on standing, or being unable to keep fluids down for more than a day.

  • Vision changes in people with diabetes: sudden blurring or floaters should be checked promptly.

Losing weight rapidly can itself raise the risk of gallstones, which is another reason steady, monitored progress matters more than speed.

How to manage the common side effects

The good news is that most everyday Wegovy side effects respond well to simple measures:

  • For nausea: eat smaller portions, eat slowly, stop when you feel full, and favour plain, lower-fat foods. Avoid rich, greasy or very large meals, especially around a dose increase.

  • For constipation: increase fluids and fibre gradually, and keep moving where you can.

  • For diarrhoea: stay well hydrated to replace lost fluids.

  • Across the board: limit alcohol, which can worsen digestive symptoms, our guide on semaglutide and alcohol explains why.

Because side effects cluster around dose increases, the pace of titration is a key tool. If a step up is difficult, your prescriber can hold or slow it rather than stopping altogether, the mechanics of that are covered in the Wegovy dosage guide. It's also worth checking which medicines to be cautious with alongside Wegovy, as some combinations affect how you feel. If you'd like the wider context on how these treatments work, see our overview of GLP-1 weight-loss injections.

Who should be cautious with Wegovy

Wegovy isn't suitable for everyone, which is part of why it's prescription-only. It shouldn't be used by people with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or the MEN 2 syndrome, by anyone with a known allergy to semaglutide, or during pregnancy. A history of pancreatitis or gallbladder disease also warrants extra caution. This is exactly what a proper assessment is for a clinician reviews your history, other medicines and any conditions before deciding whether it's safe for you. If you're considering treatment, Medetone's weight-loss consultation is the right starting point, and you can read more on the Wegovy treatment page.

Why your clinician monitors side effects

The full profile of Wegovy side effects is well documented, and regulators continue to review emerging research as more people use these medicines over longer periods. That ongoing monitoring is a normal part of medicine safety, not a cause for alarm. What matters for you is having a prescriber who reviews how you're getting on, can adjust the dose if side effects are difficult, and is the first point of contact if something doesn't feel right. It's also why the medicine shouldn't simply be stopped on your own, if you're thinking about pausing, read what happens when you stop weight-loss medication and talk it through first.

Frequently asked questions

How long do Wegovy side effects last?

Most common effects are worst in the days after starting or increasing the dose and ease within a few weeks as your body adjusts. Tell your prescriber if they persist.

Do Wegovy side effects mean it's working?

Not necessarily, side effects and effectiveness aren't directly linked. Some people have strong results with few side effects, and vice versa.

Can Wegovy side effects be reduced?

Often yes, smaller, lower-fat meals, good hydration, and a slower titration pace all help. Your prescriber can adjust the schedule if needed.

Which Wegovy side effects are serious?

Severe abdominal pain, signs of gallbladder problems, serious allergic reactions and severe dehydration all need prompt medical attention.

Will everyone get side effects?

No. Many people have only mild, temporary symptoms, and some have none at all — responses vary from person to person.

In summary

Most Wegovy side effects are digestive, mild to moderate, and temporary, easing as your body adjusts to each dose. Serious effects are uncommon but worth recognising early. With simple management steps and regular clinical review, the great majority of people navigate them comfortably and knowing what to expect is the best way to start treatment feeling prepared.
